The Spooky Turkey Burger (there’s a scary surprise inside…)

Spooky turkey burgers? To many, substituting turkey into a burger is one of the scariest things a person could do to a classic American dish – but I did it anyways. Aside from being some of the most delicious burgers I have ever tasted, they can be easily made at home and have loads of health benefits!

Unraveling the MyPlate Protein Group

The MyPlate protein group is one of the five primary food groups essential for maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet. Proteins play a pivotal role in the growth, repair, and sustenance of our body, serving as the building blocks for muscles, skin, hair, and even the immune system. In essence, they have a serious role to play in our overall health.

Exploring Animal and Plant-Based Proteins

  1. Lean Ground Turkey: Among the array of animal-based protein sources, lean ground turkey stands out as a wholesome and lean alternative to traditional ground beef. With low fat content and a high protein profile, it is a top choice for various culinary creations, from burgers to meatballs and even hearty turkey chili.
  2. Chicken: Chicken is another lean source of protein, available in various forms such as roasted and grilled.
  3. Fish: Fish, including varieties like salmon and tuna, offers not only ample protein but also heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Grilled, baked, or incorporated into a delicious fish taco, it provides a well-rounded nutritional package.
  4. Eggs: Eggs are nutritional powerhouses that offer protein along with a wealth of essential vitamins and minerals – not to mention they tend to be on the more affordable side of the protein group spectrum. They can be prepared in numerous ways, from scrambled to fried or boiled.

Several plant based sources of protein include…

  1. Tofu: Made from soybeans, tofu is a valuable source of plant-based protein. It is adaptable and can be included in stir-fries, salads, or even blended into smoothies.
  2. Lentils: Lentils, with their high protein and fiber content, are a nutritious legume that can be transformed into a hearty soup, a savory stew, or even lentil burgers.
  3. Quinoa: A versatile grain, quinoa is packed with protein and can be integrated into salads, bowls, or served as a side dish.
  4. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, peanuts, and sunflower seeds offer plant-based protein along with satisfying crunch. They make for an excellent snack option.
