Nutrition Tip of the Week: Snack in Season

Just like the weather changes with the seasons, the foods that are growing and ready to eat change with the seasons as well! (This is why you wouldn’t serve pumpkin pie at a July 4th picnic; its yummy, but not the right season!)

Wintertime in the USA means citrus season! The oranges, lemons, limes, tangelos, mandarins, grapefruits, and pommelos have been enjoying the sun and heat all year, and are now ready to be eaten. They travel well and come with their own packaging too. Take one with you for a snack!

Let’s make a simple and yummy snack that will boost your vitamin C intake and the whole family can get together to make and eat them! You can squeeze juice from oranges, or pour already squeezed juice if that’s what you have at home. Be sure to let the gelatin “bloom” in the cold juice before you heat it, or they won’t set up into chewy fruit snacks.

I used tiny ice cube molds for mine, but you can make them into any shape you’d like.
