It’s National Hamburger Day! Recipe: Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns

If you grew up in the United States, you grew up eating hamburgers! We have them for a quick dinner, BBQ them for summer celebrations, and make extra large, extra fancy ones for fun. They are famous for being unhealthy food, but they don’t have to be!

Grill your own burgers at home so that you can add more veggies to your burger! Big juicy summer tomatoes, extra pickles, sweet onions, and crisp lettuce are all great traditional burger veggies, or go wild with grilled squash, crispy sauerkraut, or spicy jalapenos!

Choosing lean ground beef and smaller patties is also an easy way to keep a burger on the healthier side. Skipping the fries for a cool summer salad works well too.

My new favorite simple swap from a drive-thru burger to a healthier one is a whole wheat bun! You can sometimes buy them in the store, but I have a recipe to share; It is quick to make, and if it is too hot in your house to run the oven, you can bake them on the grill!

What are you going to put on your whole wheat bun?

How many food groups can you fit on just one bun? Share what you know in the comments!

  1. I love making homemade hamburger buns! I just made them a couple days ago, but next time will add some whole wheat flour instead of just using white.

  2. I love anything I can bake on the grill in the summer to keep the house cool! Thanks for the recipe!
