Nasaump // Native American Porridge

Around this time of year, it’s fun to talk about the pilgrims and what they ate for their first Thanksgiving meal. Native American Indians were the ones who showed the pilgrims the best kinds of food to eat in America.

Native Americans were kind and very resourceful. They knew where to find and plant the best foods so they could feed their families all year long!

Nasaump is a favorite Native American meal made from ground corn and can be served with berries, nuts, and seeds! It is super simple to make. Let’s learn how!

Gather your ingredients! We’ll need corn meal, brown sugar, berries (fresh or frozen), dried fruit, nuts, and seeds.

To make the porridge, grab a saucepan, wooden spoon, and follow these steps.

  • Step 1 – Combine water and cornmeal. Bring to a boil.
  • Step 2 – Reduce heat and stir the mixture.
  • Step 3 – Add brown sugar.
  • Step 4 – Mix well.

Now for the fun part! Add desired toppings. We chose berries, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.
