Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), which is a celebration of Mexico’s military victory over the French in 1862. Mexico was in a time of weakness because they were unable to pay debts to some European countries. The French decided that this would be a good time to establish an empire in Mexico. The French sent 6,000 troops to Mexico, causing the president and government of Mexico to flee. Mexico’s president, Benito Juarez, was able to gather an army of 2,000 men to fight against the French.
2,000 soldiers compared to 6,000 soldiers?? You can definitely say that Mexico was the underdog in that situation!
Even though the Mexican army was small and poorly supplied they were able to defeat the French troops in this battle.
Celebrating Cinco de Mayo isn’t a big deal in Mexico but the U.S. has made it a big celebration of Mexican heritage and culture.
How will you celebrate Cinco de Mayo?? I think one of the best parts of this holiday is the food and spending time with family.
Here is a recipe that you can make with your family!
